Our Heritage

There are no distinctions between clergy and laity; we are "all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus...you are all one in Jesus."

Anyone is welcome to participate and come to any events, classes, and musicals to name a few. If you are interested in making a commitment to membership, contact one of the church staff or walk forward at the end of Sunday's message.

Our Story

On December 9, 1976 ten people met at the Ramada Inn in Pigeon Forge, TN.  Those present were Phil and Margaret Vest, Lonnie and JoAnn Henry, Lee and Doris White, Dick and Sarah Robison, and Carlos and Carol Fields.  A week-long meeting in March of 1977 was preceded by a survey of the Sevierville are and planning sessions and prayer meetings in the homes of the interested families.

The week-long meeting was conducted the first week of March with David Eubanks, Dick Robison and Carlos Fields as the speakers.  At the close of the meeting 30 people stepped forward indicating their willingness to commit themselves to the establishment of a new work.

Our first service was conducted the following Sunday, March 6, 1977, in the office room of Bill's Electric on Bruce Street with 23 people present.  That morning 17 people responded to the invitation of membership.  Services were held at the Bruce Street location for about 1 month.

A ready-made facility (then known as Trinity Baptist Church) became available.  With the help of the Smoky Mountain Christian Men's Fellowship and 20 area churches and individuals financial arrangements were made to enable the new congregation to purchase the building.  The church continues to use this property for worship today.

Dick Robison preached during our early months until Carlos Fields was able to move to Sevierville in July, 1977 to become the full-time minister.  By the end of the first year, attendance was in the 50's with visitors from around the country joining us each week.  Attendance grew to around 100 by the end of 1978.  July of 1979 saw the beginning of construction of an education wing which was completed in November, 1979.

In March 1986 the Youth Annex (then known as the Jenkin's property) was purchased.  In 1987 it became the temporary home of the new full-time minister, Steve McClure.  Steve, his wife Ginger, and their two children ministered at Smoky Mountain for the next 19 years.  During that time attendance increased, and in 2005 10 acres of Land were purchased on Cate Road for a relocation.  In April of 2007, Phil Curry became the third full-time minister of Smoky Mountain.  We continue to grow in our love and fellowship of the Lord and look forward to what the future holds for Smoky Mountain Christian Church.

Smoky Mountain Christian Church is dedicated to the restoration of the New Testament Church.
